Is the Future of Reading in the form of an E-Book?
E-Books have seen tremendous growth over the last few years, but is this just a flash in the pan or the end of traditionally printed materials?
Book Business Magazine reported that revenue of electronic books have more than tripled in the last year increasing from $11.6 million to $37 million between the second quarter of 2008 and Q2 of 2009. This drastic increase in revenue is a striking argument for the advancement in e-books, but considering that they still only account for one to two percent of total sales many consider them to still be the little brother to traditional ink and paper.
Are E-books “greener” then traditionally printed materials? Many would agree the answer is yes…well no…umm maybe….it really all depends on how you use it! Amazon has not released any numbers on the production, distribution, and storage costs and emissions for their e-reader, the Kindle, but the debate still is there. Does switching to an e-Book help or hurt the environment?
