Océ VarioStream 9210 Reaches 400 Million Impressions in Commercial Printing Environment

Production output equivalent to 66 mile-high stack of paper

September 10, 2009 – Chicago – Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery, today announced that in less than five years Midland Information Resources has printed more than 400 million impressions on its Océ VarioStream® 9210 digital printer. Following a September 2004 installation, the Océ VarioStream 9210 system at Midland was the first to reach 100 million impressions in just one year. During the past five years, Océ has helped Midland produce the equivalent of a stack of technical manuals, educational materials and other documents 66 miles high.

Midland specializes in information management and distribution services for medium-size enterprises to billion-dollar corporations in manufacturing, educational publishing and healthcare. They print eight to nine million feet per month on the Océ system to produce manuals and educational materials using various bindings. The Midland workflow is primarily monochrome, but Océ VarioStream 9000 systems are also capable of spot color printing.

"The Océ VarioStream 9210 platform delivers a high level of continuous production, reliability and uptime, along with outstanding quality and versatility. These qualities are essential for us to meet our commitments to clients and grow our business," said Don Singleton, Midland Information Resources Senior Production Manager. "The reliability of the Océ VarioStream 9210 platform combined with its ease of use has enabled us to deliver the volume of print we needed to continue to grow our business."

"Producing such tremendous volumes under such rigorous conditions validates the productivity and reliability of the Océ VarioStream 9000 platform. The accelerated results also demonstrate the investment protection inherent in Océ digital printing technology. Most importantly, this output represents a lot of business for our customer, Midland," said Guy Broadhurst, Vice President of New Technology and Client Development, Production Printing Systems division, Océ North America.

The milestone is a testament to Océ continuous feed leadership. According to InfoTrends, Océ has led the U. S. market in high speed, non-impact continuous feed toner placements segment since 2003, the first year InfoTrends began tracking this segment. According to the InfoTrends research report, "U.S. Production Copying & Printing Market Placements: 2008" published April 15, 2009, Océ led in placement of high-speed monochrome cutsheet printers (200+ ppm) and continuous feed equipment segments in the U.S. during 2008.

Simultaneous Duplexing Plus Océ TriboJump Fusing Equal Productivity

Several features of Océ technology make the high volume of throughput possible. The Océ approaches to paper handling and toner transfer result in the highest reliability in the industry. Simultaneous duplex printing and Océ TriboJump printing produce fast, uninterrupted productivity. Simultaneous duplexing eliminates steps involved in moving paper to engines multiple times for front and back printing. Nonimpact TriboJump fusing is an easier, more accurate way to transfer toner.

Remote diagnotistics allow faster analysis and correction of problems for greater uptime. The Océ PRISMAproduction® POD server helps drive productive workflow. Quality is maintained as consistently as when the printer hit the first 100 million mark. The replaceable photoconductor belt allows like-new print quality, so even as the number of impressions grows, the quality doesn't denigrate. The tight paper web allows continuous, non-impact printing with crisp registration and minimal stoppage. Operators have little added maintenance responsibility. Even when printing, they don't have to stop the machine to put in toner. The self-threading, operator-friendly engine is easy to maintain.
